Program Note
I worked with the unparalleled embouchure of Drew Schultz to create this piece. He and I share a love for math rock and progressive metal, like that of Arch Echo, Polyphia, and many others. I thought the title for the piece should reflect a title of a prog metal album, as well as one of my favorite stars, whose name means "guardian of bears."
"Light of Arcturus" takes the form of a rhapsody and asserts itself with a broken scale motive. The piece is for the innovative horn player; it contains techniques and patterns one may find either novel or extremely unsavory. The pianist affords an intergalactic harmonic palette combined with play in the late minimalist era. A quote from Plini's "Electric Sunrise" is cached in the coda.
